Introducing the Teaching System

All Moon River Wiccans will have undergone the same or similar training; either on a one-to-one basis with a mentor, or by taking part in the group courses which we run. The introductory course in Moon River Wicca is open to anyone over 18 seeking to learn about the belief system and Craft of Wicca. We welcome all seekers, at any level of knowledge or experience. The course consists of 27 lessons, a variety of home study assignments, extracurricular activities and personal one-to-ones. The training can be taken along side any other disciplines that you may be learning, i.e. Reiki, Mediumship, Massage etc.

On the introductory course you will have the chance to experience practical training in all areas, especially in Ritual, Spellcrafting and Divination. Where possible we also offer field trips to attend large group rituals. We aim to give you a balance of practical and theoretical work over the 27 lessons, to give you the foundation knowledge you will need to make Wicca a part of your everyday life. Our 'in-house' introductory course lasts for the traditional ‘Year and a Day’ and on satisfactory completion you will be given a certificate of completion and offered your 1st Degree Initiation into the Moon River Tradition. For those who decide to have an initiation into Moon River Wicca, there will be opportunities to continue with Moon River Wicca and take part in further training and development classes.

Currently Arietta Moon and Romany Rivers, co-founders of the Moon River Tradition, are teaching the courses and so you have the benefit of learning directly from Wiccan High Priestesses who have been actively practicing Wicca for a combined total of 19 years. We will support you all the way through the course and on completion you will know enough about the craft to stand confidently as a Solitary Witch, or seek a Coven to work with if you decide not to continue along your path with us.

The Degree System

Seeker – Someone who is searching for his or her path but not actively studying any particular path. If you request training into Moon River Wicca and are prepared to dedicate your time to study, you will then be considered a Moon River Wicca Dedicant

Dedicant – A Dedicant will have committed themselves to the year and a day study of Moon River Wicca. Romany describes this part of the journey as The Elemental Path, where all learning information comes from the outside; from your senses, from the elements, from your mentors, from books, from media. Your attention is based outwards; your mood is often excitable and enthusiastic.

After training for at least a year and a day, and successfully completing the study requirements, the Dedicant will have the option to take their 1st Level Initiation.

First Degree Initiate – Someone who has completed their year and a day dedicant training with Moon River Wicca and has taken their 1st Level Initiation. From this point onwards, whatever path they take in the future, they will remain a Priest/ess of Moon River Wicca. Romany describes this part of the journey as The Inner Path, where your attention now focuses inwards, where you face your inner demons, bad habits, personal dynamics, relationship issues and more. You learn more from your intuition and impulses. You learn to start trusting yourself.

After training for at least a year and a day (many students take up to three years studying this level), and completing the course requirements, the First Degree Initiate will have the option of taking their 2nd Level Initiation.

Second Degree Initiate – A Priest/ess of Moon River Wicca who has decided to take their training further and to choose a specialisation. It follows another year and a day training, which delves deeper into some of the subjects covered in the First Degree training as well as introducing some new concepts. Should the Priest/ess wish to, with the consent of his or her Mentor, they may now begin to teach others the tradition of Moon River Wicca. Romany describes this part of the journey as The Outer Path, where all the knowledge you have obtained is turned out towards your kith and kin, your home life, your career, and what your desires/denials/dreams are. You also learn how you can combine the Craft into your everyday life, and how to run rituals and castings with intuition instead of books.

After training for at least a year and a day, and completing the study requirements, the Second Degree Initiate will have the option of taking their 3rd Level Initiation.

Third Degree Initiate – After another year and a days training which concentrates on further specialisation as well as much “soul-searching” the Initiate may now claim the title High Priest/ess. Romany describes this part of your journey as the beginning of continual growth. The Akasha Path is where you learn to see the mundane as magickal, understand the web of connectedness, absorb new ideas quickly, impart knowledge clearly, know and accept your flaws and limitations and work with them not against them, deal with spirit, life, death and rebirth with compassion and a willingness to continue to learn, hold celebrations/rituals impulsively and with confidence, teach in order to learn, specialise in a particular field, create your own informed theories, and even create your own belief system.

With a nomination and collective agreement, you may be offered a position as a Moon River Wiccan Elder.

Elder - After receiving your 3rd Level, you may in time progress to becoming a Moon River Wiccan Elder. Becoming an Elder is not based on age or years of study, but on contribution to Moon River Wicca and the greater community – this decided by a council of peers and/or other Elders, after a nomination has been made.
